Manic Monday: File organization for Flashpalette websites

Wow!  Why does it always feel like Monday’s are manic.  No matter how much you prepare on Sunday night, it seems like Monday can still get out of control.

I am going to post random organizational topics on Monday’s in hope to help you avoid some of that “manic” feeling that can come from disorganization.

To start with file naming.  Web servers can not read symbols like #, & or () so we recommend that you do not use any symbols or characters in your file names.  The second recommendation is that you use sequential file numbers that start out with three digits.  This will allow your editor to import all your file in the order you want them, and help you avoid reorganizing them later.

So some examples of recommend file names:

  • smithfamily001
  • babyk100
  • jonesfamily200

If you follow those steps you will eliminate two of the biggest issues with importing images to the editor and uploading them to the web.

The next tip has to do with where you store your file on your computer.  Frequently we get clients who open their editors to find out that all their images look like red x’s in their galleries.  This is caused when your files are moved from the original location after import.

We suggest that you create a folder and save a copy of all images you want  to use in your website in that folder.  The folder should not be stored in your FlashPalette Website folder, or you will have similar issues with your images that you have when you move the files.
